Andriy Lunin saved two penalties in the shoot-out as Real Madrid eliminated holders Manchester City to reach the UEFA Champions League semi-finals for the fourth season in a row.
The match ended 1-1 after 120 minutes, with Real Madrid's Karim Benzema scoring a stunning goal in the second half to cancel out Riyad Mahrez's opener for Manchester City in the first half.
In the shoot-out, Lunin saved penalties from Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan, while all of Real Madrid's takers converted their spot-kicks.
Real Madrid will now face either Chelsea or Liverpool in the semi-finals, with the first leg taking place on April 25 or 26.
Manchester City's exit from the Champions League is a major disappointment for Pep Guardiola's side, who were looking to become the first team to retain the trophy since Real Madrid in 2017.
However, Real Madrid proved to be too strong on the night, and they will now be one of the favorites to lift the trophy in Istanbul on June 10.
