Bergamo, Italy - WEB Atalanta secured a crucial away victory against Sporting CP in their UEFA Europa League Group B match on Tuesday, March 14, 2023. The match, played at the Gewiss Stadium in Lisbon, saw Atalanta take an early lead and hold on to secure a 2-1 victory.
Rafael Scalvini opened the scoring for Atalanta in the 12th minute with a well-placed shot from outside the box. Berat Djimsiti provided the assist with a cross from the left flank. Sporting CP pushed for an equalizer and came close on several occasions, but it was Atalanta who struck again.
In the 34th minute, a fantastic passing move by Atalanta carved open the Sporting defense, and Roberto Ruggeri slotted the ball past goalkeeper Antonio Adán to give Atalanta a 2-0 lead. The halftime whistle blew moments later, with Atalanta firmly in control.
The second half saw Sporting CP come out with renewed determination, and they managed to pull a goal back in the 65th minute through Marcus Edwards. Atalanta then absorbed the pressure and defended stoutly, denying Sporting CP any clear chances to level the score.
Atalanta's victory moves them level on points with Sporting CP in Group B but ahead of the Portuguese side on away goals. The win gives Atalanta a significant advantage in the race for a place in the knockout stages.
